Key Workers are Key
Key Workers Newsletter (1)
Unite continues to press the Scottish Government to do the right thing
by the key workers who are keeping this country operating; who are
caring for our loved ones, whether in health and social care, taking
away our refuse or supporting our kids at school. These heroes have
always been essential to our lives but never more so than the last 2
months when it has been recognised just how important they are. They
are on the frontline on the fight to contain the spread of COVID-19.
Unite, along with our sister unions, have called on the Scottish Government to
recognise their real worth – not just by clapping at 8pm every Thursday evening –
but to ensure these workers are no longer undervalued and underpaid. These
heroes need to be able to pay their rent and food bills. These workers should
never have to rely on Universal Credit to make ends meet. Unite is calling to end
the long-term trend of undervaluing the workers who look after us all as and when
we need that care.
What Is Being Asked?
For all key workers to immediately be given a £2 per hour uplift. Not just during
this pandemic, but in recognition of their continued undervalued contribution they
have been making for many, many years.
Unite will be keep members updated with developments. If you are a key
worker – Unite would like to applaud you every day and not just on Thursday
evenings.
Please do not hesitate to share this newsletter with your other colleagues,
friends and families.
