Unite the Union update on consultative ballot – on West Lothian Councils introduction of random drug & alcohol testing for staff working in safety critical roles

Unite in West Lothian Council  update – Consultative Ballot Results @24th September 2019

As you will be aware Unite recently ran consultative ballots in Building Services and Operational Services in response to our members anger at the unfairness at the introduction of a new random alcohol & drug testing policy which will only affect approximately 20% of council employees. The random testing will only apply to 5% of specific job families annually within West Lothian Council.

Unite members have returned a strong mandate to reject this unfair policy then Unite will carry out our members wishes and escalate to a full legal postal Industrial Action ballot.

If you are not a member of Unite you will not get a say in any ballot or if there is a full Industrial action ballot you will not be protected or legally able to take Industrial action unless you are a member of Unite.

If you are not yet a member of Unite can you afford not to be?

The overall all return for the Consultative ballot was 68% Turnout, with 95% voting in favour of moving to an Industrial Action a ballot.

Your reps across both services will now meet with Unite full time officer to establish a timeline for a full legal postal ballot on Industrial Action, up to, but not exclusively, strike action. A strike committee will be formed and reps will keep everyone up to date.

Please contact your reps  if you wish to be involved in the ongoing campaign

Unite reps would like to thank all members old and new  in their participation in the ballot  so far  and ongoing support.
