Unison Branch Secretary Letter to Cllrs re: West Lothian Leisure Cuts
Dear Councillor,
UNISON West Lothian – Cuts to West Lothian Leisure
I am writing to you on behalf of our members in West Lothian Leisure. We wish to express our dismay that important services are being considered for severe cuts. The Board of West Lothian Leisure has approved a three year plan; this plan has been supported by West Lothian Council. The three year plan will see nearly £2.6 million cut from the leisure services available to the people of West Lothian.
West Lothian Leisure currently delivers many key services across the communities of West Lothian contributing to the development of health and wellbeing and to community engagement.
The proposals, in their current form, will result in the deletion of 59.48 (FTE) posts across West Lothian Leisure and there will be changes to operating hours impacting both on service users and staff. Additionally, Low Port Outdoor Education Centre has been earmarked for the most severe cuts; this is despite Linlithgow Outdoor Education Centre being a vital service to West Lothian residents and beyond. Low Port has an imaginative approach to education and a track record of helping children who find themselves in difficult circumstances. The centre and its staff offer opportunities in outdoor education and encourage individuals to enjoy the outdoors more often.
The brutal cuts planned will be a devastating blow to the communities our members serve. The cuts will also deprive people of the groups, activities and classes that prevent them from being socially excluded and help them to participate in the local community and economy.
Research from YouthLink Scotland, the national agency for youth work in the country, suggests that the social value of youth work in Scotland is estimated at a return of £7 for every £1 of public cash and the total value of youth work in Scotland is at least £656 million. It is clear that youth work adds huge value to Scottish society and investment in youth work provided through local councils should be protected and built on. Not decimated.
We appreciate that West Lothian Council and local government in general are in a very difficult financial situation, however, it is crucial to recognise the role that public leisure and culture plays in improving the health and wellbeing of people in their local communities, delivering a wide range of vital community services. We urge you and all Councillors to use every avenue possible to retain West Lothian Leisure Services in full.
We would like the opportunity to meet with you, with some of the key people from these services in order to discuss the overall budget, increasing revenue, marketing of profitable services such as Low Port Outdoor Education Centre and ultimately how we retain these valuable services.
We look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Martin Murray
Branch Secretary
